Indemnity/ Locum Insurance

When undertaking a locum position it is important that you confirm whether you are insured to work in the practice. There are two possibilities:

1)  The practice nominates you under their policy
2)  You obtain your own insurance policy

Locum insurance

It is worth taking out your own policy if you are going to work as a locum for any given length of time. A year’s cover roughly costs 1-2 day’s locum fees. It is advisable that you confirm with the practice prior to starting the locum position whether you are covered by their policy.

As a practice it can be important to have peace of mind in the event of the illness or injury to a veterinary surgeon. Therefore it will be advantageous to arrange an insurance policy specially designed to cover this with the benefit of the payments covering the cost of employing a locum replacement.

We recommend you obtain insurance information from a broker and recommend PPS- Professional Practice Services, who have been providing specialist insurance for over 10 years to veterinary profession and work with over 2000 practices.
