What is Continuing Professional Development and why is it necessary?

The RCVS has adopted the definition of CPD as "the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout the Member's working life." As members of a self-regulating profession, veterinary surgeons are under a professional obligation to maintain their competence and should be seeking to make continuous improvements to the standard of service they provide to their patients and clients.

The recommended minimum CPD fro a Vet is 105 hours over three years with an average of 35 hours per year. (Veterinary Nursing CPD is discussed in the National Nursing Rtegister section)

We can also arrange for locum VNs to undertake their Advanced VN course and may well be able to contribute towards the fees.** **Conditions apply. At Gardner Llewelyn we have arranged a discount of 15% with the RVC for any locum looking to update their CPD and we can provide and arrange information upon request. The Royal Veterinary College's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Unit is the UK's largest academic provider of educational services to the veterinary community.

We can also arrange CPD with a number of other institutions- Call us to discuss your CPD requirements and we will be happy to arrange or assist you.
